When design meets management

In this interview from the Hong Kong Designers Association's publication Xpress, Chloe Tang interviews design management consultant Edith Lee on the importance of good design management for the success of a design firm and for the promotion of design.
Two years ago I met Edith Lee by chance through work. What first impressed me was that Edith studied Design Management. I immediately felt interested and thought, "what is Design Management? Is it a left-brain and right-brain competition? Where can people study this discipline? Why pursue this study? How to use logical thinking to lead emotional creation? How is it helpful to designers? Will it hamper the creative process?" With the opportunity to cover this topic for Xpress, Edith answered all my questions. In Hong Kong, while our design industry is well-developed compared to other Asian countries, design management is still at a starting stage, still shaping itself.

Feature: Fellow travellers

In his monthly column for Design Week: www.designweek.co.uk/Home/Default.aspx, Adrian Shaughnessy looks at the idea of communication design and illustration as being 'fellow travelers', a concept put forward by designer Steven Heller in his upcoming book with Seymour Chwast, "Illustration: A Visual History".

Steven Heller is one of graphic design's great evangelists. He is the author, or at least co-author, of more than 100 books (the number grows by five or six each year). He is especially evangelical about design history, and finds value in sophisticated German typography from the 1930s, as well as in primitive matchbox labels.

Galeria: Helvetica Now

This poster was made for an international poster contest organized for the 50th anniversary (1957-2007) of probably the most used typography in history, Helvetica. The concept behind the poster says it all: "Helvetica is not typography, it’s lettering!" Which indicates that Helvetica outgrown itself and become far more than just typography, just as the Swiss Army knife did. As with the Swiss Army knife, in typography, Helvetica can do anything.

Feature: On Designism

This October, the Art Directors Club (ADC) hosted the third edition of "Designism", an event exploring the role of creatives in social activism and responsibility to instigate change. Randy J. Hunt writes his review of the event's proceedings for Design 21 Social Design Network.

Designism 3.0 was the third installment of the annual event hosted by the Art Directors Club in New York City on 2 October 2008. The event series was conceived by Brian Collins, the brand-building mastermind formerly of Ogilvy BIG and now COLLINS, as a forum to highlight and address design for social action. It's worth noting that Collins was the architect behind the We Can Solve It brand for Al Gore's Alliance for Climate Protection.Last year's event caused a small tremor in the design community as Vanity Fair's Michael Wolff called into question the intentions and validity of many of the participating designers' claims. His perspective, at the same time brutal and refreshing, was that everyone uses design as a disruptive force (including advertisers), so the real way to be disruptive is to not design.

25 Profissionais Brasileiros no Exterior

Então, vamos ceder a ela.

Dobrado. Trabalhe duro, mostre serviço. Você precisa valer a pena”.

Polar Opposites: Mediating the Space Between Positions in Design

The Industrial Designers Society of America's (IDSA) 2008 National Conference "Polar Opposites: Mediating the Space Between Positions in Design" will be held September 10 - 13 at the Arizona Biltmore, Phoenix.
The conference promises to be a truly newsworthy event, focusing on the many polar issues critical to all designers as they attempt to design with a goal of effectively changing existing situations into preferred ones, such as mass consumption versus minimizing footprint, quarterly profits driven by investor demands versus evolving needs of consumers, design thinking versus design as execution of products and services, women: the most powerful consumers in the world, but under-represented in the design field, designing to meet the challenges of the Boomer market when we've been designing for consumers aged 15-35, and designing with Asia and for Asia.
Featured speakers will be as fascinating and diverse as Marti Barletta, author of the book Marketing to Women and co-author of Trends with Tom Peters, and Richard Earl, keeper of the historical heritage of his grandfather, Harley J. Earl, who assembled and completed the first automotive design department at General Motors.Emily Pilloton, founder of Project H Design, will share how her global nonprofit organization supports, inspires, and delivers humanitarian and life-improving product design solutions and Wade Lukianow, VP of Plexus' Boulder Design Center will discuss his team's role in Plexus' implementation of Concept Convergence philosophies, improving customer experience and product outcomes.
