CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: ICOGRADA WORLD DESIGN CONGRESS 2009 EDUCATION CONFERENCE


Icograda is pleased to announce the Call for Abstracts for the Icograda Education Network (IEN) Conference that will take place during the Icograda World Design Congress 2009 in Beijing, China.
The Congress is being planned in collaboration with the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA). CAFA is the only national art education institution in China directly under the Ministry of Education, exclusively dedicated to the education of the fine arts, including painting, sculpture, design, architecture and art history.
IEN Conference format and themeThe Icograda Education Network (IEN) Conference brings together the worldwide community of communication design educational institutions during the Icograda World Design Congress 2009. This two-day event will include invited and refereed papers. All selected papers will be published in book form and on the Icograda website following the event.Icograda is inviting papers from the international design education community adressing the following themes:
Design Education and Innovation
Design Education and Diversity
Design Education and Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
Design Education and Regional Development

New York Festivals Innovative Advertising Awards


New York Festivals was the first to create an international competition recognizing the importance and marketing value of innovative media.When the New York Festivals' Innovative Advertising Awards, formerly known as the Interactive Awards were first established in 1992 the world was a different place and the potential of new technology as a marketing tool was still very much in its infancy.Some of the categories in this competition include: Advergames and Viral Advertising for products or services; Online Advertising, including integrated campaigns that include online elements; a wide selection of categories for Guerrilla Marketing and Alternative Media, such as ambient, event and mobile marketing, blogs, short message systems, and street teams; and CD-ROM applications.To be eligible for the 2008 competition, entries must have been produced or released between October 1, 2006 and November 26, 2007.
The deadline for entries is November 30, 2007.

The European Design Awards 2009



Athens (Greece) - The European Design Awards 2009 has been endorsed by Icograda

The European Design Awards, also known as the Ed-Awards, is a comprehensive annual awards organisation acknowledging the best of graphic design, illustration and multimedia design in Europe. The ED Awards 2009 will take place on 17 May, as part of the European Design Festival which will take place in Zürich, Switzerland.The call for submissions is now open and will close on 14 February 2009.

The jury, consisting of representatives from leading communication design magazines in Europe, will select the recipients for the 30 award categories, which are divided into seven groups and two overall prizes. The first is the Jury's Prize, which is awarded for the most exceptional piece of design in Europe during the previous year. All work awarded is automatically eligible for the Jury's Prize, regardless of whether it is successful in any of the main categories. The Agency of the Year Award is awarded to the agency with the most overall points. Any participating person or studio is eligible for this prize.

PENTAWARDS ARE IN PARIS


There is a new place dedicated to packaging design in Paris, very close to the Louvre.It is the brainchild of Fabrice Peltier, founder of the P'Réference design agency.
It’s the DesignPack Gallery , 24 Rue de Richelieu, 75010 Paris.From 26 January to 28 February 2009 this gallery will be showing the winning packaging designs of Pentawards 2008. A unique opportunity to see these creative and surprising packaging designs from the 4 corners of the world.

On Wednesday, 11 February at 6:00 PM, Gerard Caron, publisher of the website www.admirabledesign.com and president of the Pentawards jury will make a presentation on the major marketing trends and their influence on packaging design.

SHIGEO FUKUDA PASSES AWAY AT 76


At the age of 76 years old, Mr. Shigeo Fukuda passed away suddenly in Tokyo on Sunday, 11 January 2009 as the result of a subarachnoid hemorrhage.As one of the founding members and directors of the Japan Graphic Designers Association (JAGDA), Mr. Fukuda contributed profoundly to the development of the Association.Mr. Fukuda was deeply respected member of the Icograda community, serving as a Vice President of the Executive Board from 1993-1995.He was exceptionally generous with his wisdom, wit and time during numerous Icograda Congresses, Design Weeks and events, including Visualogue, the 2003 Icograda World Design Congress in Nagoya, Japan.

Steven Heller, the co-founder of the MFAH Designer as Author program at the School of Visual Arts, presents his ideas about the new role content plays in design.Over the next few weeks, Andy Altman, Ellen Lupton and others will discuss the complex blending of experience, aesthetics, information and identity that make up today's graphic design.

NEW VIEWS 2 EXHIBITION AND FORUM


An exhibition and series of forums, New Views 2 is a collaboration between RMIT University and the London College of Communication / University of the Arts London.100 international graphic design practitioners including students, emerging and established designers are featured in this exhibition of print and digital posters, in which the future of the profession of graphic design is questioned. The featured work address a variety of key issues such as design and the environment, social responsibility, new technologies and education.

AimThe overall aim is to encourage industry public debate about current issues and changes effecting graphic design practice, the future of graphic design, how the discipline relates to business and society and how design will change in the next decade and beyond.

ExhibitionDivided into two components, physical and digital, the range of techniques featured in the exhibition include using photographs, found object constructions, illustrations, collage, and typographic forms.The designs on display in New Views 2 were first seen in conjunction with the New Views 2 symposium held in London 2008, and are the result of an international call for posters. Submissions were received from students, design professionals and academics from around the world including Australia, United Kingdom, United States, Portugal, France, Turkey, Singapore and Switzerland.The London event was attended by practitioners, post graduate students and academics from around the world. This exhibition with travel to the Melbourne Museum for the November event.

OFFICIAL LAUNCH OF THE EUROPEAN YEAR OF CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION 2009


Brussels (Belgium) - The Czech Presidency of the EU and European Commission will officially launch the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 on Wednesday 7 January with the slogan “Imagine. Create. Innovate”.

The aim of the Year is to promote creative and innovative approaches in different sectors of human activity and help equip the European Union for the challenges ahead in a globalised world.The European Year will be launched in Prague in a conference attended by a host of personalities including high representatives of EU member states, Commissioners, members of the Czech government and several Ambassadors of the Year. The Conference will run in parallel to the meeting between the Commission and the Czech Government. After that, during a ceremony in the National Theatre in Prague, the launch of the Year will be announced by the Czech Prime Minister, Mirek Topolánek, and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, simultaneously with the inauguration of the Czech Presidency.

The Prague conference will be preceded in the morning of the 7 January by a round table attended by a dozen Ambassadors of the Year and presided by Esko Aho, Executive Vice President Nokia, and Former Prime Minister of Finland. These eminent personalities will adopt a set of recommendations for EU governments and institutions which will be presented by Mr Aho at the afternoon conference. German inventor Mr. Karlheinz Brandenburg, French researcher Dominique Langevin, Hungarian creator Erno Rubik or Romanian film director Radu Mihaileanu will be among the participants, together with top businessmen, artists and designers.
